Why You Should Think Twice Before Putting a Cutting Board Under Your Toaster Oven

Share Post

It seemed like a harmless kitchen idea. A woman wanted to protect her countertop from the heat of her toaster oven, so she placed a wooden cutting board underneath the appliance. The board looked sturdy, fit perfectly, and appeared to provide an extra layer of protection. At first glance, it seemed like a clever household trick that anyone could try.

But there was one important detail she hadn’t considered. Toaster ovens generate considerable heat, especially during extended cooking sessions. Although wood is commonly used for cutting boards and kitchen furniture, it is combustible and can become damaged when exposed to excessive temperatures. Placing it directly beneath a heating appliance may create unnecessary risks, depending on the oven’s design and ventilation requirements.

Some people use cutting boards, towels, or decorative mats beneath small appliances to protect their countertops. However, these materials aren’t necessarily suitable for prolonged heat exposure. Manufacturers often specify how much clearance their appliances need underneath, behind, and above the unit. Ignoring those instructions can interfere with ventilation and increase the risk of overheating.
