Why a Grandmother's 'No' Shattered Her Family Ties
Three days before spinal surgery, my daughter asked me to care for her 2 young children for 5 nights. When I said I physically couldn’t, she told my 6-year-old grandson that Grandma didn’t want him, returned the $1,200 I had given them, and shut me out of their lives. I thought she was punishing me over a missed trip, but I had no idea why my first real “no” had terrified them so much.
The message arrived at 6:12 on a rainy Sunday evening while I stood at the bathroom mirror, trying to fasten the silver bracelet my husband had given me on our 25th anniversary.
My fingers kept slipping.
