Joe Amabile's Incredible NYC Marathon Finish Just 88 Days Post-Surgery

Bachelor Nation’s Joe Amabile is celebrating a major milestone after having brain surgery. The Bachelorette alum, 40, completed the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, just 88 days after going under the knife to remove a blueberry-sized tumor in his left frontal lobe back in August. Amabile documented his achievement via his Instagram on Sunday with a video of himself at the marathon finish line holding his completion medal. “88 days ago I was waking up from brain surgery. Today, finishing the New York marathon,” he said in the inspiring clip, kissing his medal. The reality star later uploaded a carousel of photos and videos from the day, including a sweet clip of his wife, Serena Pitt, overcome with emotion as her man crossed the finish line. “WHAT A DAY! My worst time yet and my greatest accomplishment at the same time,” Amabile wrote in the caption. Pitt, 29, commented, “I’ll never forget today you inspire me and so many around you!!” Pitt also posted an Instagram video from the marathon, documenting herself and former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe cheering Amabile on from the sidelines. “I can’t even put into words how proud and inspired I feel today! AND how happy I am that it’s over!” the Bachelor in Paradise alum wrote in the caption. “@joeamabile1 your motivation and positive mindset has never faltered even through this incredibly challenging season of life. To watch you cross the finish line only 88 days after brain surgery was an indescribable feeling. You are my hero and I love you so much .” Last month, Amabile confirmed exclusively to Us that he planned to run in the NYC Marathon just three months after his brain surgery. “Having brain surgery is, kind of, out of your control and having a brain tumor is something that’s out of your control, so to give myself a goal that gave me control back just made me feel like it was important,” he said. “I just kept my mindset positive.” “I didn’t think I was retired from running marathons, but then I was like, ‘You know what? I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna do it again this year, three months after I had brain surgery,’” the former grocery store owner told Us. “The feeling I will get when I cross the finish line, I’m sure will be greater than both marathons, even though I’m gonna run it slower.” Amabile also gave Us an update on his recovery from surgery. “Recovery hasn’t been, as you would imagine, the easiest, but overall, I’m doing good,” he explained. “I mean, the beginning’s the toughest because you’re on a ton of pain meds and you’re in a lot of pain. For the first week and a half, when I would move and stuff, there would be a squishiness in my head, which would really freak me out. When I would sit down, too, if I sat down too aggressively, I would hear movement in my brain.”

Detroit Lions' Jack Campbell Sparks Concern After On-Field Injury Shocks Fans New

Detroit Lions' Jack Campbell Sparks Concern After On-Field Injury Shocks Fans

The Detroit Lions have issued a new official statement concerning the wellbeing of their star linebacker Jack Campbell amid his hospitalization following a potentially terrifying neck injury. “Jack Campbell is resting and will remain in a local hospital tonight, for continued evaluation and monitoring,” the team announced in a written statement shared via their official X account on Sunday, November 1. “The team will provide updates as we have them.” Campbell, 26, was seemingly “immobilized” following what appeared to be a relatively normal tackle against Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson on Sunday during his team’s 19-15 victory over the Vikings. After the Lions’ athletic training staff swarmed the linebacker — who did not appear to be able to move after his initial fall — and quickly rendered aid, the athlete was carefully moved onto a backboard and carted off the field. An audible hush went over the crowd at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, as fans watched on. Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave a solemn and brief update on the all-pro player’s condition during a press conference shortly after the team’s emotional victory, relaying that the organization would update the press and fans alike as new information regarding the linebacker’s condition became available. “Let me start with this: You know, thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family,” Dan, 50, told reporters at the time and before taking questions on the team’s Sunday performance, which handed the Vikings their first 2026-2027 loss. “He’s being taken care of — we don’t have any new information,” the head coach continued. “We’ll keep you updated as this goes, um, but we’re thinking of him.” An audibly emotional Erin Andrews reported from the sideline shortly after Jack was carted off the field, sharing what one member of the team said about how important the linebacker is to the organization while seeming fighting back tears. “He said, ‘This is Jack Campbell’s defense. I don’t hesitate to say that it goes through him and everyone in that locker room knows that,” Andrews, 48, said. “Point blank period.” Both Vikings and Lions players were visibly emotional in the wake of the incident, with many taking a knee until Jack was carted off the field and others wiping tears from their eyes before retaking the field and resuming play. “Heavy emotions in Detroit,” Michigan Sportscaster Brad Galli wrote via X after his initial post regarding the incident. “All the Lions players and coaches surrounded Jack Campbell before he was carted off at Ford Field.”

The Surprising Body Part That Has No Blood New

The Surprising Body Part That Has No Blood

Have you ever wondered if every part of your body contains blood? We often think of blood as something that travels through our entire body, bringing oxygen and nutrients to every organ and tissue. It keeps us alive, helps us heal, and protects us from illness. But here is an interesting question: Which part of the body has no blood? Is it the skin, hair, muscles, or lungs? At first, you might think this is an easy question. However, the answer may surprise you!Let’s take a closer look at these four choices and discover some interesting facts about the human body.A. SkinOur skin is the largest organ of the human body. It covers almost the entire body and protects us from germs, sunlight, and harmful substances.Skin also helps control body temperature and allows us to feel things such as heat, cold, and pain.Does skin contain blood? Yes, it does! The deeper layers of the skin contain many tiny blood vessels. These vessels bring oxygen and nutrients to skin cells and help repair damaged areas.Have you ever noticed that your skin turns red after scratching it or when you feel hot? This happens partly because blood flow near the skin’s surface increases. So, skin is not the correct answer.B. HairNow, let’s look at hair!Hair is something most of us see and touch every day. It grows on our heads and on many other parts of our bodies. It helps protect our skin, keeps us warm, and even plays a role in our sense of touch. But here is the surprising fact: The part of the hair that you can see and touch has no blood vessels! This is because the visible part of hair, called the hair shaft, is made mostly of a protein called keratin. It consists of dead cells that have become filled with keratin.Since these cells are no longer alive, they do not need blood to carry oxygen or nutrients. You may wonder: If hair has no blood, how does it grow? The answer is found beneath the skin. Each hair grows from a tiny structure called a hair follicle. At the bottom of the follicle is a small area called the hair bulb. Here, living cells divide and produce new hair cells. These growing cells receive oxygen and nutrients from tiny blood vessels in a structure called the dermal papilla. As new cells are produced, older cells move upward, become filled with keratin, and eventually form the hair shaft. This is why cutting your hair does not hurt. The visible part of your hair has no nerves or blood vessels! However, pulling hair from its root can hurt because the living tissues around the follicle contain nerves. Therefore, B. Hair is the correct answer!C. MuscleMuscles help us move, walk, run, lift objects, and even smile. They need a lot of energy to work properly. Where does this energy come from?Blood!Muscle tissue contains many blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients. These are especially important during exercise, when muscles need more energy.Without a good blood supply, our muscles cannot function normally. So, muscle is not the correct answer.D. LungOur lungs are two important organs that help us breathe.Every time we inhale, air enters the lungs and travels into tiny air sacs called alveoli. This is where oxygen moves into the blood, while carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the air so we can breathe it out.The lungs have an extensive network of blood vessels to make this exchange possible.Without blood flowing through these vessels, our bodies would not receive the oxygen they need to survive. Therefore, lungs are not the correct answer either.Final Answer: B. Hair! Now we have our answer: Hair is the correct choice!More precisely, the visible part of hair, known as the hair shaft, has no blood vessels. It is made of dead, keratin-filled cells. However, the living structures beneath the skin receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood.Isn’t the human body amazing? Even something as ordinary as a strand of hair has an interesting scientific story behind it!The next time you get a haircut, remember this little fact: your hair can be cut without pain because the part being cut has no blood vessels or nerves.Science is everywhere, even in the smallest things we see every day!

Reckless E-Bike Riders Turn Central Park into a Battleground New

Reckless E-Bike Riders Turn Central Park into a Battleground

See more of our coverage in your search results. So much for a walk in the park.Central Park goers want lawless e-bikes to slow down but the reckless riders are defiantly flouting laws and turning the greenspace into a danger zone. Now some fed-up locals say it’s time for an outright ban.A group attempts to enforce a stop sign on a Central Park bike path by the West 72nd Street entrance. Stephen YangE-bikes and e-scooters were involved in 33 crashes in the park through Oct. 18 and Central Park while precinct cops wrote 144 e-bike tickets through Oct. 25, up from 39 a year earlier, according to NYPD data,After the crashes and rule-breaking, safety advocates are pushing to ban e-bikes from Central Park, as Parks Department workers struggled to get riders to obey “no riding” signs in areas of the park where riders are asked to get off their bikes. When a Citi Bike rider was told to stop by a park worker riding in the “no riding” zone Wednesday, he cheekily called back, “Have a nice day.”Minutes later, an e-scooter rider sailed past a worker asking him to slow down. “He don’t give a f–k,” a bystander observed.“It seems like it’s mostly the delivery guys on their electronic bikes that are speeding because they’re always in a hurry to deliver something,” said Lee Zehngebot, 75, a snowbird who uses the park whenever he’s back in New York.Even parks workers calling out for riders to follow the rules didn’t stop out-of-control cyclists. Robert Miller for NY PostLee sitting with his wife Wendy who uses a wheelchair said they see delivery workers on e-bikes breaking the rules. Georgett Roberts for New York PostThe NYC E-Vehicle Safety Alliance rallied in the park Tuesday to call for an e-bike ban in city parks, joined by crash victims including Dave Katz, 71, who was hit head-on two years ago by an e-biker he said was looking at his phone and wearing earbuds.“I had a concussion, two major gashes, one that they couldn’t stitch up. My nose was broken, I had broken teeth and six ribs broken,” Katz said. The crash still weighs on Katz.“It’s really impacted me emotionally, I have to say, to this day, there is some depression that you never shed so easily, and I’m the half full type of guy,” Katz said.Dave Katz suffered a concussion, broken teeth, a broken nose, six broken ribs and lasting psychological damage after he was moved down by an e-bike. Dave KatzCommunity Board 8, which covers the Upper East Side, voted Oct. 21 to ask the city to ban every e-bike from Central Park except pedal-assist models, plus e-scooters and mopeds.Supporters point to crashes like the one that left Jean Kotler, 43, with a traumatic brain injury after an e-bike rider hit her from behind as she jogged on West Drive near West 64th Street on July 7, forcing doctors to remove part of her skull. The rider tried to leave, but pedestrians surrounded him and forced him to stay until first responders arrived, a witness told The Post. The NYC E-Vehicle Safety Alliance rallied in the park Tuesday to call for an e-bike ban in city parks. Stephen YangDespite the lawlessness, Mayor Zohran Mamdani ended criminal summonses for e-bike traffic violations in March, leaving cops to write civil tickets. Meanwhile, City Council Speaker Julie Menin dropped e-bike registration from her 17-bill safety package in August and punted the issue to Albany, which has in past years shown no appetite to register e-bikes in New York City. Cars have been banned from Central Park’s drives since 2018, but a city pilot launched in 2023 has let e-bikes and e-scooters use them, along with other park drives and greenways. Safety advocates say it’s not working. “They run all the lights,” said Janet Schroeder, a spokeswoman for the e-vehicles safety alliance. “Our park is not for transportation, it is for relaxation.”A park spokesperson told The Post it’s “critical that our public realm can safely accommodate the many diverse ways that New Yorkers get around.”“Reckless behavior is never permitted, and our Parks Enforcement Patrol have been enforcing these rules since the pilot began in 2023,” the spokesperson said. Still, riders breaking the rules said it was for their livelihood. After a park worker told an e-bike rider with a delivery bag on his back to stop, he kept going and shouted back, “I got to go to work, bro!”

Doctor's Unbelievable Wedding Decision Sparks Outrage and Inheritance Shock New

Doctor's Unbelievable Wedding Decision Sparks Outrage and Inheritance Shock

I married my patient knowing she had only 3 days left to live — after her funeral, her sister handed me a box and whispered, “She wanted you to have this.”My name is Gavin. I’m thirty, and becoming a doctor was all I ever wanted. My parents couldn’t afford to help much with tuition, so I spent most of my twenties studying during the week and working whatever jobs I could find on weekends. Even after graduating, I was still carrying more student debt than I liked to think about. Then I met Lila. She was eighteen, beautiful, and somehow the funniest person on the oncology floor.Even when her treatments left her too exhausted to sit up, she found something to joke about. She teased the nurses about their terrible coffee, complained that the hospital gowns made everyone look ninety, and always had something ridiculous to say whenever I entered her room.“Dr. Gavin, do they teach you how to smile in medical school, or is that an extra course?”I’d pretend to be offended, which only made her laugh harder.Sometimes, when I was having a particularly difficult shift, I’d stop by her room for a few extra minutes. She’d tell me about her friends, the little apartment she hoped to have someday, and the places she wanted to visit when she got better.I never knew what to say when she talked about the future.Lila had been fighting cancer for almost two years, and by the time she came under my care, her body had stopped responding to most treatments.Still, she never stopped making plans. Then one Tuesday morning, the test results came back. The medication wasn’t working anymore. Her condition was getting worse, and there was nothing left that could change the outcome. The senior doctor explained everything to Lila and her family as gently as possible. She probably had three days.I remember standing outside her room afterward, staring at the chart in my hands. I had spent years learning how to help people, yet I couldn’t think of a single thing that would make what she had just heard any easier. When I finally went inside, Lila was sitting against her pillows, looking out the window.“You’re doing that face again,” she said.“What face?”“The one where you look like somebody stole your lunch.”I pulled a chair beside her bed, but before I could speak, she turned toward me.“Can I ask you something really strange?”“That depends on how strange.”She smiled a little. “I have one last wish.”“What is it?”“I want to marry you.”For a moment, I honestly thought I had misunderstood her.“Lila, what?”“Come on, Doctor. I don’t want to show up in heaven as an unmarried woman.”I laughed nervously, waiting for her to admit she was joking. She didn’t.Instead, she reached for the glass of water on her bedside table. Her hand trembled so badly that I had to help her hold it.“I know you’re not in love with me,” she said after taking a sip. “I’m not asking you to pretend. I just want to have a wedding once. I’ve spent two years letting other people make decisions about my life. Please let me choose this.”I explained that I was her doctor and that marrying a patient wasn’t something I could simply agree to.She listened without interrupting. Then she looked at the hospital bracelet around her wrist.“I know it’s a crazy thing to ask. But I don’t have time to meet somebody, fall in love, and plan a real wedding. I just want one nice memory before all of this is over.”I should have told her no.I should have spoken to my supervisor, found another way to make her feel special, or asked the hospital’s patient support team for help.Instead, I looked at the frightened young woman sitting in front of me and convinced myself that refusing would only hurt her more. That evening, I arranged for another physician to take over her care. The next morning, we had the smallest wedding imaginable.I wore a blue tie over my white shirt instead of my stethoscope. A nurse made two simple rings from strips of clean bandage, while another brought a small portable speaker and played Lila’s favorite song. Her older sister, Paige, arrived carrying a bouquet of white daisies.Lila wore a soft white scarf over her bald head like a veil. She looked so happy that I almost forgot how unusual the whole situation was. When the officiant asked whether I would take Lila as my wife, she grinned at me.“Don’t think too long, Doctor. I’m running out of time.”Everyone laughed, including Paige, who was already crying.I said yes.Lila slipped the little bandage ring onto my finger, and when the ceremony ended, she asked the nurse to take a photograph.“Make sure I look pretty,” she said.Paige leaned down to straighten her scarf.“You always look pretty, sweetheart.”Two days later, Lila was gone.I attended her funeral wearing the same blue tie I’d worn at our wedding. The church was full of people who had known her far longer than I had. Friends from school stood beside her family, holding photographs of a smiling girl with long brown hair.I stayed near the back, unsure where I belonged. After the service, I walked to my car and stood there for several minutes, trying to gather myself. That’s when Paige hurried toward me.She was carrying a small wooden box.“Lila wanted you to have this,” she said. “She made me promise not to give it to you until after she was gone.”My name was written across the lid in Lila’s handwriting.I thanked her and lifted it open.Inside was a folded letter from a law firm, a sealed envelope, and a small photograph from our wedding.I opened the lawyer’s letter first.By the time I reached the second paragraph, my hands had started shaking.Lila had left me her entire share of a trust fund established by her grandmother. The amount was $186,000.Enough to pay off every student loan I had, with money left over.I read the figure three times, certain I had made a mistake.“What is that?” Paige asked.I couldn’t answer. She took one look at the document, and her expression changed.“That’s Grandma’s money.”“Paige, I didn’t know anything about this.”She pulled the letter from my hands and began reading. Her grandmother had left both sisters money for college, housing, and whatever they needed to begin their adult lives. Paige had used some of hers to finish nursing school, while Lila’s portion had remained untouched because she had spent so much time receiving treatment. Now Lila had given all of it to me.Paige stared at the paper.“You married my sister, and now you’re getting almost two hundred thousand dollars?”“No. I mean, yes, that’s what it says, but I swear I had no idea.”She looked at my wedding ring.“She was eighteen, Gavin. She was sick, frightened, and completely dependent on the people looking after her.”“I know.”“Then why did you agree to marry her?”I tried to explain about her final wish, but Paige shook her head.“I was there. I helped her get dressed. I thought you were doing something kind for her.”“That’s exactly what I thought I was doing.”“Then why are you standing here with our grandmother’s money in your hands?”Her voice rose, attracting the attention of several people leaving the church.I reached for the box, but she stepped back.“You knew she trusted you. You knew she wasn’t thinking about anything except making the most of her last few days.”“Paige, please listen to me.”She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.“I’m going to report this to the hospital. They deserve to know what you did.”Then she turned and walked away.I stood beside my car, holding the box against my chest. For the first time since meeting Lila, I understood just how much trouble my decision could cause. That evening, I sat alone at my kitchen table with the lawyer’s letter spread in front of me.Beside it was a student loan statement showing a balance of more than $140,000.For years, that number had followed me everywhere. I’d skipped vacations, driven the same unreliable car since college, and put off moving into a better apartment because almost every extra dollar went toward my loans. Now I had enough money to make all of it disappear.I opened my banking app and stared at the balance. For a few minutes, I let myself imagine what it would feel like to be free of those payments. Then I remembered Paige standing outside the church, asking why I’d married her sister.I pushed the documents away. The next morning, I called the lawyer listed on the letter.“I don’t want the inheritance,” I told him.He sounded surprised.“Mr. Harris, your wife made her wishes very clear.”“I understand that. But I can’t accept it.”He explained that refusing the inheritance would require formal paperwork and that I should consider speaking to my own attorney first.I agreed to do whatever was necessary.By lunchtime, I had a much bigger problem. My supervisor, Dr. Whitman, called me into her office. She was sitting beside a woman from the hospital’s administration department.“Gavin, we’ve received a serious complaint regarding your relationship with a former patient.”I felt my stomach tighten.Dr. Whitman asked me to explain the wedding.I told her everything, including Lila’s request, the ceremony, and my decision to transfer her care to another physician beforehand. She listened until I finished.“Did you discuss this marriage with anyone in hospital leadership?”“No.”“Did you ask for an ethics consultation?”I lowered my eyes. “No.”“Why not?”I couldn’t think of an answer that sounded reasonable. Finally, I admitted the truth.“I was afraid someone would tell me I couldn’t do it.”Dr. Whitman leaned back in her chair.“Gavin, that should have been your first indication that you needed advice.”She explained that transferring Lila’s medical care did not erase the professional relationship we had already established. Lila’s condition had also made the situation especially sensitive.I tried to tell her that I had never expected money.“I believe you may be telling the truth,” she said. “But this isn’t only about the inheritance.”By the end of the meeting, I had been placed on administrative leave while the hospital investigated.I walked out carrying my belongings in a cardboard box.Three years earlier, when I had first received my hospital identification badge, I had called my parents from the parking lot because I was so excited. Now I couldn’t bring myself to call them at all.The following week was miserable.Paige posted our wedding photograph online, along with a statement accusing me of taking advantage of her younger sister.Within hours, strangers were sharing it.Some people called me a disgrace to the medical profession. Others demanded that the hospital take away my license.A former classmate sent me the post with a simple message.“Is this really you?”I typed three different replies and deleted them all. There was no way to explain what had happened in a few sentences, especially when the wedding photograph showed me smiling beside a terribly ill eighteen-year-old girl.My mother came to see me that evening. She found me sitting on the couch, surrounded by unopened mail.“I don’t believe you wanted that girl’s money,” she said after I told her everything.“Then why does everyone else?”She sat beside me.“Because you made a decision they don’t understand. And honestly, Gavin, I’m struggling to understand it myself.”I wanted her to tell me I had done the right thing.Instead, she asked why I hadn’t called another doctor or spoken to Lila’s family about making the day special in some other way.“She wanted to get married, Mom.”“And you were the doctor she trusted. You could have helped her understand why you couldn’t be the groom.”I looked away. For days, I’d been telling myself that agreeing had been my only chance to make Lila happy. Now I was beginning to wonder whether I’d simply been too afraid to disappoint her. After Mom left, I finally opened the second envelope from the wooden box.Inside was a handwritten letter.Dear Gavin,If you’re reading this, I guess my big wedding adventure is over.I hope you aren’t too sad. You gave me something wonderful, and I got to wear a white scarf without anyone complaining that it made me look like somebody’s grandmother.I laughed through tears. Then I continued reading.Remember when you told me how you worked at a grocery store while studying to become a doctor? You said your mom used to leave sandwiches in your backpack because you couldn’t afford to buy lunch.I thought about that a lot.Everybody kept telling me how unfair it was that I wouldn’t get to use the money Grandma saved for me. But I don’t want it sitting somewhere while I’m gone.I want you to have a chance to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard for. This isn’t payment for marrying me. I had already decided I wanted to help you before I asked about the wedding. Please don’t feel like you owe me anything.Love, Lila.I sat at the table for nearly an hour, holding her letter.I believed every word. But the fact that Lila had meant well didn’t make what I’d done right. Two weeks later, the hospital scheduled a formal review. Before the meeting, my attorney advised me to prepare a written account of everything that had happened.I spent an entire weekend working on it.At first, I wrote that Lila had insisted on marrying me.Then I looked at that sentence and realized how unfair it sounded. She had asked.I had agreed.I erased the word “insisted” and started again.During the review, one of the committee members asked whether I would make the same decision if another seriously ill patient requested something similar.Six weeks earlier, I would have said yes without hesitation. This time, I answered differently.“No. I would help them find another way to make the day meaningful. I wouldn’t agree to become part of their personal life.”“Why?”“Because I understand now that I had more responsibility in that situation than Lila did. She trusted me as her doctor, and I should have protected that relationship.”Another committee member asked about the inheritance.I showed them the documents proving that I had begun the legal process of refusing it.I also provided the original notice from the lawyer. That helped establish when I’d been formally informed of Lila’s gift, but it could not prove what I had known before the wedding. The committee told me they would review all the evidence before making a decision.I left feeling no more certain about my future than when I’d arrived.A few days later, Paige called. It was the first time we’d spoken since the funeral.“I heard you turned down the money,” she said.“Yes.”There was a long silence.“Why?”“Because it belongs with your family.”She didn’t answer immediately. Then she asked whether I would meet her at her mother’s house.I arrived Saturday afternoon carrying the wooden box.Paige opened the door without smiling. We sat at the kitchen table where she and Lila had done their homework as children. Family photographs covered the refrigerator, including one of the two sisters standing beside their grandmother.I placed the box in front of her.“Lila’s scarf and the wedding photograph are inside. I thought you might want them.”Paige opened the lid and touched the white fabric. For a while, neither of us spoke. Then she looked up.“She really liked you, you know.”“I liked her too.”“After the doctors told us she only had a few days, she kept talking about that wedding. Mom thought she was confused, but I knew she wasn’t.”Paige folded the scarf carefully.“She was excited about something for the first time in weeks. That’s why I helped.”Her eyes filled.“But when I saw that letter, all I could think was that somebody had used my little sister when she couldn’t protect herself.”I nodded.“I understand why.”“Do you?”“More than I did that day.”I told Paige that I regretted agreeing to the marriage without seeking proper advice, even though I had genuinely wanted to make Lila happy. She listened quietly.“I’m not going to withdraw my complaint,” she said.“I know.”“But I’ll tell the hospital that Lila asked for the wedding and that I helped arrange it. I’ll also tell them I never heard you ask about her money.”I thanked her.She wiped her face and looked back at the scarf.“That doesn’t mean I’m ready to forgive you.”“I understand.”Before I left, Paige handed me the little photograph of Lila smiling in her hospital bed.“Keep this,” she said. “She wanted you to remember her looking happy.”The hospital’s final decision came almost a month later. The investigation found no evidence that I had married Lila to obtain her inheritance. However, the committee concluded that I had crossed a serious professional boundary and failed to seek appropriate guidance.I received a formal reprimand, a period of suspension, and mandatory professional-boundary training. I would also have to work under supervision when I returned. It wasn’t the outcome I had hoped for when the investigation began. But I accepted it.The inheritance refusal was eventually completed, and Lila’s money returned to her estate to be handled according to the applicable legal arrangements. My student loans were still waiting for me.During my suspension, I picked up temporary administrative work to keep up with the payments. Some mornings, I drove past the hospital and wondered whether I would ever feel comfortable walking through those doors again.Eventually, I did.On my first day back, Dr. Whitman met me outside the ward. She handed me my new badge and explained my supervision schedule. Then she looked at me for a moment.“You were a good doctor before this happened, Gavin. I hope you’ll learn from it.”“I will.”She nodded and opened the door.Later that afternoon, I was checking on a patient when his frightened mother asked me to promise that he would recover.I pulled a chair beside her instead of giving her the answer she wanted.“I can’t promise that,” I said gently. “But I can explain what we know, and I’ll ask the senior doctor to come speak with us.”She began to cry.I stayed until my colleague arrived. That evening, I found Lila’s photograph tucked inside my desk drawer. She was wearing her white scarf and smiling at the camera, with a small bandage ring resting against her cheek.I remembered how she’d laughed when the nurse told her to stop moving for the picture. For a long time, I’d been afraid that admitting my mistake meant denying that her happiness had been real.Looking at her photograph, I knew both things could be true.I had made Lila happy that morning, and I had made a decision I should never have made.I placed the photograph back in the drawer, picked up my patient charts, and returned to work.

Martha Stewart Faces Backlash Over Controversial Halloween Costume Deletion

Martha Stewart has deleted a Halloween photo from her Instagram after dressing as a homeless person while promoting her line of QVC candles in the same post. The image, which was screenshotted and shared widely before it was removed, showed the 85-year-old in ripped jeans and a torn sweater with dirt smeared across her face, holding a clipboard sign that read 'I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!' Two dogs sat on a porch beside her. The caption on the carousel, which also included photos of candles, read: "My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!" A woman with an estimated net worth of $400 million dressed as someone who cannot afford to eat, in a post designed to sell luxury candles. The internet took roughly four minutes to arrive at a verdict. The backlash It started on Instagram and spread quickly to X and Reddit, where a thread in the r/popculturechat community drew hundreds of comments. ' Martha Stewart absolutely tone deaf and totally out of touch,' one user wrote. 'What on earth was Martha Stewart thinking with that Halloween outfit,' said another. ' Martha Stewart dressed up as a homeless person for Halloween and then deleted it. That's a sentence I didn't expect to type today.' Others called the costume 'offensive', 'gross', and 'out of touch'. The recurring theme was not just the costume itself but the fact that it appeared alongside a sales pitch for candles, which made the whole thing look less like a creative choice and more like someone who genuinely did not understand why it was a problem. Screenshots of the post continued to circulate long after it was taken down. Martha Stewart's Halloween costume did not go down well. Credit: Instagram Stewart's response On Sunday, Stewart issued a statement to Page Six. "I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention." She added: "Homelessness continues to remain one of America's greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about." She said she was 'committed to continuing to make a difference'. The awareness defence is a familiar one. It is the go-to explanation when someone famous does something involving poverty, illness, or hardship and gets called out for it. Whether dressing up as a hungry person for a candle advert constitutes 'raising awareness' or simply using someone's suffering as a costume that can be taken off at the end of the night is a question Stewart's statement did not address directly. Martha Stewart. Credit: Randy Brooke/Getty Why it hit differently this year The timing made it worse. America is in the middle of an affordability crisis. Grocery prices have risen for the fourth consecutive year. Housing costs are at record levels in most major cities. Homelessness has increased by double digits in multiple states since 2024. Against that backdrop, one of the wealthiest women in America put on torn clothes, smeared dirt on her face, held up a sign begging for food, and used the image to sell candles. Even people who would normally defend a celebrity's right to wear whatever they want for Halloween struggled to find a line of reasoning that made this one work. Stewart did not delete her Facebook version of the post, which was still live on Sunday. She was also back on Instagram by Sunday morning with a new post about saffron. The crisis, it appears, has been absorbed and moved past. The costume has been deleted, but the screenshots survive. Featured image credit: Instagram
