What Your Fingernails Might Be Telling You About Serious Health Risks New

What Your Fingernails Might Be Telling You About Serious Health Risks

See more of our coverage in your search results. Your nails might be trying to tell you something — and checking them could be the easiest way (hands down) to spot hidden health problems.Meaning “little moon” in Latin, lunulae are the half-moon shapes at the base of your nails. It’s where new nail cells are made and pushed forward. They’re most prominent on your thumbs and are smaller and less visible as you move out to the pinkies.Researchers analyzed studies going back to 1954, when the first research was published on a particular kind of unusual lunulae, to find exactly what the mini-moons can tell us about our health. New research says one nail abnormality could be a warning sign. oreans – stock.adobe.comLunulae are usually white, because the nail is thicker there, obscuring the blood vessels on the nail bed. That said, not everyone has them, and not having lunulae doesn’t indicate you’re unhealthy. But when you have lunulae that turn red, it could spell danger. “Red lunulae may reflect both systemic disease activity or local pathology,” the authors wrote. What reserachers foundNails are highly sensitive to health changes in the body. It needs a steady flow of nutrients, oxygen, and blood flow to grow continuously, and changes to any of these will affect the way they grow. For example, using GLP-1s has recently shown to be associated with discolored and detached nails. That’s why we’re been looking to our nails for so long as indicators of health. Back in that first 1954 report, researchers in London observed 61% of folks examined with red lunulae also had heart failure. All the others with red lunulae had some kind of systemic disease like emphysema and chronic bronchitis (both known as COPD), cirrhosis (longterm liver scarring), and cancer, including polycythemia vera (a blood cancer that causes thick, slow moving blood), lymphoma (cancer of white blood cells), and myeloid leukemia (cancer of blood and bone marrow). Researchers offered this example of a red lunulae on a 77-year-old man. Christopher G. Karim et al.Since then, more research has shown red lunulae are connected with autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata (which causes the hair to fall out in round patches), dermatomyositis (which causes skin rashes and muscle weakness), and systemic lupus erythematosus (aka SLE, which attacks healthy tissue and organs.)Author also note connections with congestive heart failure, psoriasis, carbon monoxide poisoning, and lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), a sexually transmitted infection caused by certain variants of the Chlamydia bacteria. But exactly why red mini-moons on your nails are connected to any of these conditions “remains unclear,” authors say. They do point out though, that the association only exists if multiple fingernails have red lunulae — if it’s just one, something local like an injury under that nail, is more common. It’s also important to note that having a red lunulae doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong, just as having white ones doesn’t mean you’re perfectly healthy.Authors say that the review simply shows support for more investigation if a patient comes in with red lunulae.“Given the rarity of the occurrence, its potential diagnostic relevance is often overlooked,” write the researchers. “When identifying red lunulae, clinicians should consider connections to underlying systemic or dermatologic disease. This subtle clinical sign may facilitate early detection and identification of salient systemic disease.”

Texas Mom's Disturbing Claim: Is Her Son's Body in a Vegas Museum? New

Texas Mom's Disturbing Claim: Is Her Son's Body in a Vegas Museum?

A mother who claims that her son's dead body is being used in a museum display without her consent claims she has 'proof' it is really him. As previously reported , Kim Erick claims that the Real Bodies exhibition in Las Vegas has been showcasing what she believes are the plastinated remains of her son, 23-year-old Chris Todd Erick, who died in 2012. Chris’s death was officially ruled a suicide after a toxicology report found a lethal amount of cyanide in his system, after authorities had initially believed he'd died in his sleep at his grandmother’s home after suffering two heart attacks linked to a heart defect, per Yahoo . Kim claimed that police photographs from the scene of Chris's death had further fueled her suspicions that something untoward had happened before his death, as she claimed they showed bruises, lacerations, and what appeared to be a chair fitted with straps. Christopher Todd Erick's body was found at his grandmother's house in 2012. Credit: Facebook Kim claims that she never had the chance to hold a funeral for her son, alleging that her ex-partner, Chris’s father, arranged a cremation for him while she was in shock and grieving. A 2014 homicide investigation ultimately produced no evidence of foul play, but the ordeal was not over for the grieving mother, who claims she found his body at the Real Bodies exhibit in 2018. She became convinced that one of the figures - known as The Thinker - was actually the skinned and preserved remains of her late son. "I knew it was him," she told The Sun . "It was unbelievably painful. My words cannot describe how this shook me and my family to its core. I was looking at pictures of my son’s skinned, butchered body. It is gut-wrenching." She claimed that certain marks and features on the body were "proof" that it was indeed Chris, telling the outlet: "I started looking online for the deep skull fracture I saw in Chris’s right temple of his head when he died. "When I saw the plastinated body online in the news article with this same skull fracture… it was too painful to look closer." She also pointed out that Chris had a tattoo on his shoulder and that the spot where it sat on his body had been shaved away - something that is unusual for plastinated bodies. The Real Bodies exhibition features real human bodies that have been plastinated to show the inner workings of the anatomy. Credit: Frank Mullen/WireImage/Getty Images However, despite Kim's claims, the museum responded to rebutt the allegations that the body was Chris's, stating that The Thinker was created long before Chris had died. The exhibition’s owner, Imagine Exhibitions, Inc., issued a statement to Lead Stories , saying: "We extend our sympathy to the family, but there is no factual basis for these allegations. "The referenced specimen has been on continuous display in Las Vegas since 2004 and cannot be associated with the individual named in these claims. “All specimens are ethically sourced and biologically unidentifiable. We remain committed to ensuring that all exhibits meet the highest ethical and legal standards.” The company has previously stated that its plastinated bodies were sourced from China and entered the exhibit over 20 years ago – long before Chris’s death. Lead Stories also found archived photos of the specimen that predate 2012, supporting the museum’s timeline, and noted that the plastination process can take up to a year, making it impossible for Chris’s body to have entered the exhibit so soon after his death. Kim continues to search for answers, but there is so far no evidence connecting her son's body to the Real Bodies exhibition. Featured image credit: Facebook

Kim Kardashian's Dazzling Pink Look at Singapore Grand Prix Sparks Buzz New

Kim Kardashian's Dazzling Pink Look at Singapore Grand Prix Sparks Buzz

Kim Kardashian stepped out in style to cheer on boyfriend Lewis Hamilton at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix. Kardashian, 45, wowed in a fitted, pastel pink halter gown as she walked through the F1 paddock before the Saturday, October 10, qualifying races. The Skims mogul accessorized her glitzy ensemble with a matching Hermès handbag and tied her signature dark tresses into a slicked-back bun. Hamilton, 41, kicked off his Singapore Grand Prix journey early on Saturday, securing a P2 finish in a qualifying race. “I had a mega start which is awesome,” he told reporters after crossing the finish line. “I love driving this track in the rain and those conditions, so as soon as the heavens opened I was like, ‘This is a great day.’” The Ferrari driver added, “I think we showed that we, obviously, have a good car. I think if we can do slightly better in Qualifying, get both cars up there, I think we'll be able to reapply pressure tomorrow to both the Mercedes and the Red Bull [teams].” Kardashian has been a fixture at Hamilton’s F1 races since the pair started dating in February after spending nearly a decade as friends. “I was really single for five years, and that felt great,” she told The Times of London in a profile published earlier this month, addressing her dating status before her romance with Hamilton. “I could focus on my kids and projects that I really wanted to be involved with. I really felt no rush. Like, I really didn’t feel empty.” Kardashian, who shares four children with ex-husband Kanye West, further noted that she wanted to "completely heal” before diving into a new relationship. (Following her divorce, the Kardashians star was briefly romantically linked to Pete Davidson and Odell Beckham Jr., respectively.) “I felt like I needed my time,” she acknowledged. “I wasn’t ready to open up. I really wasn’t even thinking about it. The universe works in your favor when you just allow it to.” When questioned about her romance with Hamilton, Kardashian declined to offer any further details. “In the most respectful way, I’d probably rather not,” she succinctly added. Kardashian and Hamilton’s private relationship has heated up — on and off the F1 race track. “They are really in love. Kim may want to have more kids with Lewis,” a source exclusively told Us in August of the couple’s potential next steps. “They just get each other, they get each other’s quirks. She is really happy with him.”

Italy's Biggest Wine Heist: How Thieves Stole $5.8M Worth of Bottles

See more of our coverage in your search results. Thieves stole about 30,000 bottles of some of Italy’s most prized wines worth an estimated $5.8 million from a winery in Tuscany, in what the producer described Friday as the country’s largest wine theft on record. The theft targeted Marchesi Antinori’s facility near Cortona, in the province of Arezzo, where a group of at least seven thieves on Saturday night made off with bottles of some of Italy’s most sought-after wines, including Solaia, Tignanello and Guado al Tasso. The theft was discovered Monday, but the company made it public on Friday to avoid interfering with the investigation.Thieves stole about 30,000 bottles of prized Italian wine worth $5.8 million from Marchesi Antinori’s winery in Tuscany. via REUTERSChief Executive Renzo Cotarella said the thieves disabled the winery’s alarm system and surveillance cameras before entering with two large trucks.Using the company’s forklifts, they loaded the vehicles with wine and fled during the night.“It is certainly a very well-prepared gang,” Cotarella said, adding that it may be the same group that has targeted other Italian wineries in recent months. “A theft of this size and value has never occurred in Italy.”The stolen bottles were all from the 2023 vintage and are typically sold at a retail price of between 150 euros and 500 euros each. They included about 10,000 bottles of Solaia, one of Antinori’s flagship wines, from what Cotarella described as an exceptional year. The stolen wines included bottles of Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso from the 2023 vintage. Marchesi Antinori via APThe company, founded in 1385 and run by the Antinori family for 26 generations, said it was alerting customers worldwide to be wary of offers outside official sales channels.“We are informing our clients around the world and asking them to pay attention to any offers outside the official channels,” Cotarella said.Authorities are investigating how the stolen wine may be sold. Police and Carabinieri officers are examining surveillance footage and other evidence.Using the winery’s forklifts, the thieves (not pictured) loaded up the wine and fled under during the night. Bloomberg via Getty ImagesCotarella said he remained confident investigators could trace the shipment, noting that two truckloads of wine would be difficult to move without attracting attention. The theft eclipses previous high-profile wine robberies in Italy. In 2017, thieves stole about 2,000 bottles of rare wines valued at 750,000 euros from a warehouse near the Adriatic resort town of Cervia.

Who Deserves Your Seat? The Viral Test That Reveals Your True Character New

Who Deserves Your Seat? The Viral Test That Reveals Your True Character

We have all been there. You are sitting on a crowded train or bus after a long, exhausting day at work. Your feet hurt, your brain is tired, and all you want to do is close your eyes and relax until your stop. Then, the doors open, a crowd rushes in, and suddenly you are staring at a group of people who clearly need to sit down more than you do.In that split second, a quiet psychological battle begins in your mind. Do you close your eyes and pretend to sleep? Do you stare intently at your phone screen? Or do you stand up and offer your seat? This classic everyday dilemma is perfectly captured in a viral illustration that asks a simple but profound question: “Who deserves your seat? And why?” On the surface, it looks like a simple riddle or a basic test of manners. But look closer. The options presented to you—a mother holding a sleeping baby, an elderly woman leaning heavily on a cane, a young man with a severely broken leg, and a literal zombie—force you to make a choice. And according to psychologists and behavioral experts, the option you choose does not just say something about your manners; it reveals your deepest personality traits, your core values, and how you navigate the world.Let’s break down each choice and see what your answer says about your true character.Choice 1: The Mother and the Baby (The Protective Empathetic)If your immediate instinct was to stand up for Person 1, the young mother holding her swaddled, sleeping baby, you are a person driven by deep empathy and a strong protective instinct.Carrying a baby while standing on a moving train is not just tiring; it is dangerous. One sudden brake or sharp turn could cause her to lose her balance, risking the safety of her child. By choosing her, you show that you instinctively prioritize the vulnerable and the future generation. What this reveals about your character:You are naturally nurturing: You cannot bear to see children or parents struggling. You likely value family above everything else. You are highly empathetic: You do not just see a person standing; you imagine their stress. You think about how tired her arms must be and how anxious she feels trying to keep her balance. You focus on long-term safety over immediate comfort: You choose to protect life and innocence. In your friend group, you are likely the “parent” figure—the one who makes sure everyone gets home safely and has eaten.Choice 2: The Elderly Woman (The Traditional Respecter)If you chose Person 2, the elderly woman bent over her walking cane, your character is deeply rooted in respect, tradition, and a strong sense of social duty.In almost every culture around the world, respecting our elders is one of the first moral lessons we are taught as children. This woman has lived a long life, her body is fragile, and she simply does not have the physical strength to endure a rough train ride. What this reveals about your character:You value tradition and respect: You believe in the unwritten rules of society. For you, offering a seat to an elderly person is not an option; it is an absolute duty. You have high moral standards: You care deeply about doing what is “right” and “proper.” You believe that a society can be judged by how well it treats its oldest citizens. You are grateful and reflective: Choosing the elderly woman shows that you appreciate those who came before you. You possess a mature outlook on life, recognizing that youth is temporary and that everyone will need help eventually.Choice 3: The Injured Young Man (The Logical Practical)If your eyes immediately went to Person 3, the young man on crutches with a heavily bandaged leg, your character is guided by logic, fairness, and immediate physical need. While the mother and the elderly woman are tired and fragile, the young man is actively dealing with an acute, painful medical injury. Balancing on one foot with crutches on a moving vehicle is physically exhausting and highly risky. If he falls, he could re-injure his leg, requiring surgery or making his condition much worse. What this reveals about your character:You are a logical problem solver: You do not let emotions completely cloud your judgment. You look at the facts: Who is in the most immediate physical danger right now? The man with the broken leg.You value fairness and objectivity: You see past age and gender. Even though he is a young man, you recognize that his current physical limitation makes him the most vulnerable person in that specific moment. You are highly practical: In an emergency, you are the person people want around. You do not panic; you assess the situation, find the most critical problem, and solve it efficiently.Choice 4: The Zombie (The Wild Card / The Humorist)Now, let’s talk about the literal monster in the room. If you chose Person 4, the terrifying, tattered zombie standing at the back, you are a very unique individual.Obviously, in a real-world scenario, a zombie would not be riding the subway (and if he were, giving up your seat would be the last thing on your mind!). But including a zombie in this psychological test is a brilliant way to catch your brain off guard. What this reveals about your character:You have a great sense of humor: You do not take life too seriously. You love finding the absurdity in everyday situations. You are a creative, out-of-the-box thinker: You do not like conventional answers. While everyone else is debating the ethics of age versus injury, you choose the option that disrupts the status quo.You are driven by survival (or curiosity): Perhaps you gave him the seat so he wouldn’t eat your brains! This shows you have a sharp wit and a quick survival instinct. You prefer to diffuse tense situations with comedy or unexpected actions. The Hidden Choice: What If You Keep Your Seat? There is one more option that the image subtly highlights: YOU. What if you look at all four of these individuals, pull your briefcase a little closer, and decide to stay seated? Before we judge this choice too harshly, let’s look at it through the lens of modern psychology. Choosing to keep your seat does not automatically make you a bad person. What this might reveal about your current state:You are completely burnt out: Sometimes, we are so emotionally and physically exhausted that we simply have nothing left to give. If you are running on empty, you cannot pour from an empty cup.You practice strict self-preservation: You might be dealing with an invisible illness, chronic pain, or intense mental stress that nobody else can see. You recognize that your own well-being must come first in that moment. You are brutally honest with yourself: You do not pretend to be a hero for social approval. You accept your limitations and your current needs without guilt.

Big. Tom Welling's NYC Photo Mishap Has Everyone Talking New

Tom Welling's NYC Photo Mishap Has Everyone Talking

Turns out, there is more than meets the eye in Tom Welling’s recent skyline photo. “Hello, NYCC,” Welling, 49, wrote in a since-deleted Friday, October 10, Instagram Stories post, per a screenshot obtained by Page Six, referring to the New York Comic Con convention currently underway. While the Smallville alum showed off his hotel view of New York City, the window accidentally caught a NSFW glimpse of Welling fully nude. Welling, who eventually deleted the image, has not further addressed the incident. Us reached out to a rep for the actor for comment. Welling recently traveled to New York City for its local Comic Con, which will feature a special 25th anniversary reunion panel of the Smallville cast. He notably starred as Clark Kent a.k.a Superman. “I think for Clark, he got to relax and have a little sarcasm and a little bit of fun,” Welling recalled of his character’s romance with Erica Durance’s Lois Lane on a recent episode of the “Inside Of You” podcast. “Before, it was the weight of the world, you know, emotionally, you didn't get to see that side. That's what I saw come out in Clark through the Lois relationship.” While Clark and Lois’ teen romance remains a staple of Smallville lore, Welling enjoyed a certain arc even more. “It's ‘Transference’ when Clark and Lionel switch bodies,” he recalled of his favorite episode. “I don't know if it's a perfect episode, but I just remember being like, ‘I got to put my big boy shoes on for this one, like, this is John Glover’s character.’” Glover, 82, appeared on the CW hit as the villainous Lionel Luthor, who infamously swapped places with Clark in prison during season 4. “I wasn't supposed to come in until the afternoon at the prison and James Marshall called me. He goes, ‘I need you to come to set.’ It's, like, 8:30 in the morning,” Welling recalled of shooting the body-swap scene. “I'm like, ‘Of course.’ …  And he goes, ‘John Glover needs your help.’” According to Welling, Glover had allegedly struggled to master Clark’s stillness. “John's in a cell. And I go over to him, [and ask], ‘John, what's going on?’ And he goes, ‘Tom, how do you do it?’” Welling added. “And I go, ‘What?’ He goes, ‘How do you do nothing? You just stand there.’” He continued, “Obviously, I look up to him as one of the greatest actors I'll ever be around in my life, and we had a brief conversation. I don't know if it's what I said but maybe how I said it that [about] my vibe, and he sort of settled into something. I just remember that being like, ‘This is this is amazing what we're trying to do here.’”

Maura Higgins is clearing the air amid viral speculation suggesting that Dancing With the Stars is rigged to guarantee she waltzes away victorious. “There was a rumor … [that] was all over the press that, like, seemingly ‘Dancing with the Stars is fixed for me to win,’” Higgins, 35, claimed on a recent episode of season 34 finalist Alix Earle’s eponymous YouTube series. “I was so tempted to comment on it and go, ‘Oh my God, does that mean I don't actually have to learn any of the dances?’” Higgins eventually talked herself out of publicly responding to the online allegations. “I was like, ‘Don't feed into it, Maura, because this is what you do,’” she quipped. “But, I wish that [rumor] is true!” Higgins has consistently topped the leaderboard during the first four weeks of the hit ballroom dance competition, performing alongside her The Traitors season 4 costar Mark Ballas. The dancing duo even earned the season’s first 9 during the Tuesday, October 6, live broadcast. “The 9 [score] means everything to me because, you know, I have to work extra hard. This dancing doesn’t come naturally to me,” Higgins exclusively told Us after her waltz to Mariah Carey’s “If It’s Over” earned a total score of 25 out of 30 from the judges. “I can be quite stiff, [and] I honestly do have such a good partner in Mark.” She continued, “He’s so patient with me, and in the rehearsal room, like, we do put the work in, and I don’t shy away from hard work.” While Higgins impressed the entire ballroom with her elegant routine, she admittedly “fell to the floor” in shock that it was so well-received. “I cannot believe it, and I did not expect it one bit,” she mused on Tuesday. “I mean, it’s crazy, and it’s not me putting myself down, but there’s way better dancers in this competition. I genuinely feel like so many others should have got 9s. That’s wild, I’m so happy, and I have no words for it. … I’m so happy, and all I’m doing [is] my best.” Ahead of the competition, Higgins had struggled with her self-confidence that Ballas, 40, has since helped her work through using “positive self-talk.” “Any time I’m having self-doubt or being negative about myself, he’s like, ‘No, no, let’s try again,’” she explained. “It’s like anything, the more you do something, the better you get. We just persevere and persevere, and it doesn’t matter how long it takes. Like, the double turn in tonight’s dance. He was so close to taking that double turn out because we had our rehearsal yesterday and it didn’t go swimmingly great. When I did it [tonight], I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I did it’ in my head!” Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

Pastor's Wife Wears Donated Jewelry: The Shocking Revelation New

Pastor's Wife Wears Donated Jewelry: The Shocking Revelation

My grandmother, Estelle, had attended the same little church for forty-three years.Even near the end, when arthritis twisted her fingers and walking from the parking lot left her short of breath, she refused to miss Sunday service. I used to tell her the church would survive one week without her, and she would tell me I worried enough for the entire congregation.Three weeks before she di3333:d, Grandma called me into her bedroom and pointed toward the top drawer of her dresser.Inside was a dark velvet box I recognized immediately. My grandfather had given her the gold necklace, bracelet, and earrings for their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. She wore the set only on special occasions, and after Grandpa di3333:d, it became one of the few expensive things she still kept.“I want Pastor Calvin to auction these,” she told me.I thought she was joking.“Grandma, these are worth a lot.”“That’s the idea.”She explained that the church food program had been struggling to keep up with families who needed help. Several elderly members depended on the grocery boxes, and the church was planning a fundraiser the following month.“You could leave money instead.”“I could,” she said, “but your grandfather bought these for me because he wanted me to enjoy them. I did. Now somebody else can get something useful out of them.”I offered to deliver the jewelry for her.Grandma shook her head.“No. If I’m giving it away, I want to do it myself.”That Sunday, I held her arm while she climbed the church steps, moving slowly with her cane in one hand and the velvet box tucked beneath the other. After the service, she waited until most people had left and approached Pastor Calvin Pierce.“For the charity auction,” she said.He opened the box, and even he looked stunned.“Estelle, this is incredibly generous.”Grandma smiled. “Then make sure it helps somebody.”He hugged her and promised it would.I took a photograph because Grandma looked so proud standing there beside him, one hand still resting on the open velvet box.Twelve days later, she di3333:d.The funeral was held in that same church.Pastor Calvin spoke warmly about her loyalty, her kindness, and the number of people she’d quietly helped over the years. His wife, Janine, hugged me afterward and told me Grandma had been “one of the good ones.”At the time, I believed she meant it.The following Sunday, I went back because staying home felt worse.I was speaking with one of Grandma’s oldest friends near the entrance when Janine walked past us.I stopped in the middle of a sentence.Grandma’s necklace was around her neck. The matching bracelet circled her wrist, and the earrings moved beneath her hair when she turned her head. There was no chance I was mistaken.Years earlier, Grandpa had caught the necklace clasp in a car door and left a tiny dent in the gold beside it. Grandma used to complain about it every time she wore the set.I waited until after the service and approached Janine near the fellowship hall.“Beautiful jewelry.”She smiled brightly. “Thank you.”I touched the edge of my own collar.“That necklace has an unusual clasp. Was the dent already there when you got it?”Her fingers moved toward it.“I think so.”“Where did you get the set?”Janine answered without hesitation.“My mother. I inherited it after she di3333:d.”For a moment, I thought grief might be making me irrational. Then I looked at the bracelet.Same pattern.Same small repaired link near the hinge. She was wearing Grandma’s entire anniversary set.Janine smiled again.“Sentimental pieces are priceless, aren’t they?”I forced myself to smile back.“Absolutely.”I went home angry enough to call Pastor Calvin immediately.Instead, I pulled up the photograph I’d taken the day Grandma donated the jewelry. Then I found the appraisal from her insurance papers.Estimated value: $11,400.I printed both. The following Sunday, I walked into church carrying another velvet gift box.Pastor Calvin noticed it before I reached the sanctuary.“Is that something else Estelle left for the church?”His expression changed so quickly that I almost missed it.Interest.Too much interest.I held out the box.“Grandma wanted the church to have one more thing.”“How generous.”He opened it immediately. His smile disappeared.Inside was the photograph of Grandma handing him the jewelry.Underneath it was the appraisal.Pastor Calvin stared at both.“What have you done?” he whispered.“Nothing.”“Then why bring this here?”I kept my voice calm.“Because I realized I never heard how Grandma’s jewelry did at the auction.”His jaw tightened slightly.“It didn’t go to auction.”I waited.“Janine bought it beforehand.”That was not the explanation I expected.“She bought it from the church?”“Yes. She liked the set, so she made an offer. There was no reason to wait for the fundraiser.”“And the money?”“Went directly into the food fund.”Before I could respond, Janine appeared beside him.Her expression changed when she saw the photograph.Calvin said quietly, “We were just talking about Estelle’s jewelry.”I looked at Janine.“You bought it?”She nodded.“Then why did you tell me your mother left it to you?”Her face tightened.“I panicked.”“Why?”“You’d just buried your grandmother. I knew you’d recognize it, and I thought seeing me wear it would upset you.”Pastor Calvin nodded eagerly.“Exactly. It was badly handled, but that’s all.”For one second, I nearly accepted it.Grandma had raised me to assume confusion before cruelty. She hated public scenes and always said most problems became worse when people decided what had happened before asking. So I asked.“How much did Janine pay?”Calvin hesitated.“I’d have to check.”“You don’t remember?”“We process a lot of donations.”“This was eleven thousand dollars’ worth of jewelry.”“An appraisal doesn’t mean that’s what it would’ve sold for.”“I know. So show me the sale record.”His smile disappeared completely.“What record?”“The church keeps financial records, doesn’t it?”“Of course.”“Then there should be a record showing what Janine paid and that the money went into the food program.”Calvin closed the box.“I’ll find it.”“When?”“This week.”I smiled.“Perfect.”Five days passed. He didn’t call. When I finally texted him, he said the bookkeeping had been messy lately and asked me to give him more time.I tried to convince myself that was possible. Then I ran into Mrs. Keating at the grocery store. She had been one of Grandma’s closest friends and had received food assistance from the church after her husband di3333:d.We talked for a few minutes before she sighed and looked at the groceries in her cart.“Your grandmother used to bring me extra things from the pantry. She always worried I wasn’t eating enough.”“She worried about everybody.”Mrs. Keating smiled, then her expression faded.“The pantry isn’t what it used to be.”I frowned.“What do you mean?”“Last month I got two cans of beans, pasta, and cereal.”“For the whole month?”She nodded.“Pastor Calvin said donations were down.”That stayed in my head all afternoon. The church had spent months promoting fundraisers, posting pictures of donated items, and reminding people how much local families needed help.Yet the pantry was nearly empty. When I got home, I searched through old church newsletters. One fundraiser flyer from the previous year caught my attention.A designer handbag had been donated by a family I knew.I had seen that exact bag recently.Janine’s sister carried it to a Christmas luncheon. At first, I told myself it could be a coincidence. Then Pastor Calvin finally called.“I found the record.”“How much did Janine pay?”“Eight hundred dollars.”I looked at Grandma’s appraisal again.“Eight hundred?”“She made an immediate offer. No auction fees, no uncertainty.”“Did anyone else have a chance to bid?”Silence.“Maren, I don’t appreciate what you’re suggesting.”“I’m asking whether anyone else could have offered more.”“Your grandmother wanted to help people. Eight hundred dollars still helped people.”That sentence bothered me more than anything else he’d said.“As long as the church gets something, it doesn’t matter what the donation was worth?”“I didn’t say that.”“You didn’t have to.”He ended the call soon after.I sat at my kitchen table staring at the old fundraiser flyer. Then I started calling donors. The first woman knew nothing about who had bought her handbag. The second had donated an expensive espresso machine and had been told it “sold privately.”A man who donated two vintage watches didn’t know their final sale price either.By the fourth call, I stopped believing in coincidence. One watch had appeared on Janine’s brother. The espresso machine was in her sister’s kitchen.A designer coat donated at another event had appeared in photographs posted by Calvin’s niece.None of the donors had been told those items were being sold privately to the pastor’s family.I could have confronted Calvin again.Instead, I called and apologized.“I was emotional,” I told him. “Grandma had just di3333:d, and seeing Janine wearing the jewelry hit me harder than I expected.”His voice softened immediately.“I understand.”“I’d still like to do something in Grandma’s memory at the upcoming fundraiser.”“Of course.”“I could help organize the donated items. Maybe make cards listing the donor, estimated value, starting bid, and final sale price.”There was a short pause. Then Calvin said, “That sounds very professional.”“Transparency might encourage people to give more.”He agreed. For the next two weeks, I became the most helpful person in church.I arranged tables, printed cards, contacted donors, and offered to speak briefly about Grandma before the auction started.Janine even squeezed my shoulder one afternoon.“I’m glad we’re past that misunderstanding.”“So am I.”The fundraiser was packed. After everyone settled in, Pastor Calvin stepped to the microphone.“And now Estelle’s granddaughter has prepared something special in her memory.”I wheeled out a covered display board.Calvin smiled. Then I removed the cloth. At the center was the photograph of Grandma wearing her anniversary jewelry.Below it were three lines.DONATED BY ESTELLE HARPER.APPRAISED VALUE: $11,400.SOLD PRIVATELY BEFORE AUCTION: $800.The room went silent.Someone near the front finally said, “Eight hundred dollars?”Janine touched the necklace around her throat.Pastor Calvin reached for the microphone.“An appraisal does not necessarily reflect actual market value—”“I agree,” I said.He stopped.“That’s why I’m not accusing anyone of stealing eleven thousand dollars.”Janine crossed her arms.“Then what exactly are you doing?”“Trying to understand why Grandma’s jewelry never reached a public auction.”People started murmuring.Janine said sharply, “Fine. We’ll pay more if that’s what this is about.”“It isn’t.”I walked to the next table and uncovered four enlarged photographs. The handbag. The espresso machine. The watches. The coat. Each card listed the donor and estimated value.Mrs. Talbot, who had donated the handbag, stood up.“That’s mine.”I nodded.“Did you know who bought it?”“No.”Someone else turned toward Janine.“Doesn’t your sister have that bag?”Janine’s face changed.Calvin stepped forward.“These were private sales. The church received money for every item.”“Then tell everyone what each one sold for.”He froze.A man near the back stood.“I donated those watches. How much did your brother-in-law pay for one?”Calvin looked toward Janine.Nobody answered. The room grew louder.Someone asked whether there had ever been bids at all. Another person wanted to know why donors weren’t told when valuable gifts were sold privately. Then Mrs. Keating spoke from the second row.“If all this money went into the food program, why are our grocery boxes getting smaller?”That was the question that changed the room.Calvin lowered the microphone.A week later, the church board began reviewing the fundraiser accounts.A month after that, they called me.They never gave me every detail, but they told me enough.Several valuable donated items had been sold privately for far below reasonable value, mostly to members of Calvin and Janine’s extended family. Some of the records were incomplete, and the board couldn’t clearly trace every payment into the charity account.Calvin stepped down.Janine returned Grandma’s jewelry. The board offered the velvet box to me.For a few seconds, I wanted to take it.Then I remembered Grandma climbing those steps with her cane, determined to give the set away herself.“No,” I said. “She donated it. Just do what she asked.”At the next fundraiser, Grandma’s jewelry sat under bright lights with a proper auction number beside it.Bidding passed ten thousand dollars. Then eleven. Finally, someone offered twelve thousand four hundred.Sold.A few weeks later, Mrs. Keating called me.“They changed the pantry program,” she said. “You should have seen my grocery box this month.”“What was in it?”She started listing things until I laughed.Chicken.Fresh vegetables.Milk.Fruit.Enough food for weeks. After we hung up, I pulled out the photograph I’d taken of Grandma that final Sunday. She was standing beside Pastor Calvin, smiling proudly while he held the velvet box.For a long time, that picture had made me angry. Now I mostly looked at Grandma. She had given away something she’d treasured because she believed it could make life a little easier for someone who was struggling. It took longer than she expected. But eventually, it did.

Christa Pike's Shocking Survival: The Aftermath of Two Failed Executions

As previously reported, Pike, now 50, was due to be executed on September 30 after spending 30 years on death row for a murder she committed as a teenager. Pike admitted to killing her Job Corps classmate, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, in 1995 after fearing that she was interested in her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, 17. Pike, who was 18 at the time, lured Slemmer to a secluded location where she and Shipp tortured and beat her, before she was killed after a large piece of asphalt was dropped on her head. Credit: Tennessee Department of Corrections Shipp carved a pentagram into Slemmer's chest, while Pike took a piece of Slemmer's skull as a trophy, which she later showed off around the school. Pike was sentenced to death , while Shipp - who was under 18 at the time of the crime - was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Another friend, Shadolla Peterson, who acted as a lookout, received six years of probation. After 30 years on death row, Pike's execution was attempted on September 30, after she and her lawyers had mounted several unsuccessful appeals on the basis that the lethal injection could cause undue suffering for her. When it came to her receiving the lethal injection, it took several attempts for an IV line to be placed in her arm, with witnesses reporting that seven needles were used, including one which came out of her arm "bent". She was given two doses of pentobarbital, designed to end her life, but both failed to kill her, which meant she was then rushed to hospital for life-saving measures. Pike remained unconscious for several days after the botched execution but ended up coming round, with her lawyers saying she was able to speak and even stand up. Her legal team has shared further updates on Pike's condition after surviving the lethal injection, revealing that she is facing "cognitive challenges" and "profound psychological trauma" after the botched execution. They said in a statement, per the New York Post : "While her physical recovery has been remarkable, significant questions remain about the long-term effects of what she endured. "Christa is dealing with the profound psychological trauma of having survived a failed execution, including the terror, pain and uncertainty of believing she was about to die. "Christa also continues to experience cognitive challenges with concentration and memory." Christa Pike survived two lethal injection attempts. Credit: Tennessee Department of Corrections Pike, who was set to be the first woman executed by the state of Tennessee in over 200 years, had appealed against being put to death by the lethal injection after fearing it could cause an excessively painful death. In an audio recording obtained by The New York Times and shared by her attorneys, Pike referenced Tony Carruthers, a fellow Tennessee death row inmate whose execution was called off in May after executioners could not set up an intravenous line. She noted that Carruthers lived out her worst nightmare, detail for detail, due to similar issues with finding usable veins. In the released audio, Pike voiced intense anxiety about the chemical reactions expected from the injection process, saying: "The concerns I have on our lethal injection method are simply that I do not have good veins, and I'm worried about our physician not being qualified to start a central line on me. "If that happens because - he wasn’t able to on Tony Carruthers. Tony Carruthers lived out my worst nightmare. Detail for detail. "And so that sounds scary to me because they used the word Drano in speaking about this drug, and the thought of suffocating and drowning on my own bodily fluid and blood isn’t very appealing to me," Pike said in the recording. During the execution attempt itself, Pike had complained about pain at the IV site, telling those administering the drug: "My arm feels like it's about to burst open." After two doses of pentobarbital, witnesses said that Pike could still be heard snoring in the chamber, where she was tied to a gurney. After she woke up in hospital days after the failed attempt, her lawyers revealed that she'd shown signs of positive physical recovery, with her arms - which had been significantly injured - beginning to heal and regain movement. They added in the statement: "Her lungs are clear, and she has started to eat a regular diet. Physicians are encouraged by her physical recovery." Pike had been on death row for over 30 years. Credit: Tennessee Department of Corrections Pike's long-term prognosis remains unclear as she is believed to be the first person to ever have survived the lethal injection, with Tennessee Governor Bill Lee pausing all remaining executions this year, as well as an independent review into what went wrong. Pike's lawyers also called for Gov. Lee to commute Pike's sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole, arguing: "She should never be subjected to another execution attempt."
